The mPowerRatings Micro-Enterprise Mentorship Program.
mPowerRatings believes in corporate social responsibility and facilitates the development of people as a cornerstone of black economic empowerment. As such, the organisation operates a mentoring program, matching existing micro-enterprises with mPowerRatings subscribers to create an environment of information and skills exchange. Through the program, the mentor company gains points towards its BEE scorecard, while contributing to the development of micro-business in South Africa.
How does it work? A subscriber to the www.mpowerratings.co.za website is encouraged to join the program, which entails the mentoring of one or more black micro-enterprise businesses. The benefit to the subscriber is the improvement of its BEE status and hence its scorecard. The micro-enterprise gets to display its services on the website's Products and Services directory for free, which dramatically increases its market exposure. There are numerous other benefits, some of which are mentioned below.

What are micro-enterprises?
There are vast numbers of existing black one-man type businesses serving our communities throughout South Africa. These are typically operations such as those of painters, tilers, builders and many other artisans, who advertise their services in rudimentary ways on roadside lampposts, on walls and fences, and rely heavily on "by word of mouth" referrals to attract business. Can you tell me more? With the assistance of large organisations such as paint, cement and brick manufacturers, we will identify existing and new micro-enterprise businesses with a view to providing on-going training, marketing and business development support. The subscriber (mentor) provides the all-important online marketing support on the website, where each micro-enterprise owner will be identified by way of a photograph and his ID details, for security purposes. The subscriber will be expected to conduct periodic evaluations of work carried out by the micro-enterprise, and log the names and contact details of references on the website for the benefit of future customers. mPowerRatings will continuously assess and examine ways to ensure the long term and stable improvement of the status of all the micro-enterprises on the program, such as access to banking services, preferred product pricing from suppliers, etc.
What are the costs to a subscriber and what effect will it have on its BEE status?
As part of the annual subscription charge an additional cost of R50 per month, excluding VAT, will be levied for each micro-enterprise sponsored. The subscriber can improve its BEE status by up to 10% (or 20% if it is a Qualifying Small Enterprise) of the total available points (100%) on its BEE scorecard for "Enterprise Development", in terms of government's broad-based generic BEE scorecard.
